The Book of Secrets: Ritual Observations of Mapping the Ordinary and the Mundane

This picture is page 39 of my book which is stated above as this blogs title. I took this photo using my Nokia 2 mega pixel cell phone. However, I did not alter the billboard. I am an artistic recorder of the signs and synchronicity conducts the reverberated flow. I love this photo and I wanted to post it on the web freely. It is the most prolific and blatant statement. The picture was taken in Berkeley, California at the intersection of Ashby Avenue and Sacramento Street on Wednesday March 26, 2008. This was two days before my thirty-ninth birthday. I find it an interesting dichotomy that this is viewed as a crime in the eyes of the Justice System. However, the point's attack is the most accurate artistic statement presenting our current time(s). I'm not implying that artist have to be criminals. That idea was perfectly captured in the movie Art School Confidential. What I am implying is that spray painting is inherent in the human vocabulary as establishing a voice and a vision informing community. As an artist, I have had the privilege of observing the nature of things. Nature is in perfect order. Humans generate all the problems because we think. We think it has to be the way we think it works. We are not looking at what is working now and how it exists. We are looking for what and how will benefit us as individuals. I believe it is in our faces daily disguised as trash and uselessness: We are collectively going to have to examine our dependency using capitalism. It is inevitable!

I agree. "The words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and tenement halls" (or in this case, a billboard)- Simon and Garfunkle, Sound of Silence.

On a funnier note, it reminds me of another old song that Homer and Jethro did a cover of:

The Billboard Song

As I was walking down the street one dark and gloomy day
I came upon a billboard and much to my dismay
The sign was torn and tattered from the storm the night before
The wind and rain had done it's work and this it what I saw

Smoke Coca-Cola Cigarettes, chew Wrigley's Spearmint beer
Ken-L Ration dog food keeps your wife's complexion clear
Simonize your baby with a Hershey's candy bar
And Texaco's the beauty cream that's used by all the stars

So take your next vacation in a brand new Frigidaire
Learn to play piano in your winter underwear
Doctors say that babies should smoke until they're three
And people over 65 should bathe in Lipton Tea
-Cy Coben and Charles Grean

Glad you are Blogspot-ing!

Digesting your mind is a unforgettable deeply satisfying meal! That is why quiche is only a desired taste for the educated palette of the few. Your comment is as potent as the billboard. Two precise creative musical examples that both emphasize the point.

The funniest thing is: I have this posted on my space. They are blasting promotion for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, right now.

Hi Girly! I bestow upon you the Art Pico award! I was honored having been awarded the Art Pico award from my friend Marianne, "Mandala Queen" as I affectionately refer to her, and I am supposed to choose 5 other folks, and of course I had you in mind! See my blog (er, the Blogspot one) for details. Much love!

i love that you're living out loud here--and speaking up and out about what you see and how you see it. carry on! i will visit you here often! this is an extraordinary dilemma--the leftovers of capitalism and consumerism and the people these systems exploit and leave behind. i appreciate your observations. thank you for making them visible and public.

Thanks for adding a comment! I am so glad you like the post. I want to add some new things but, I really want to generate some dialogs first. I felt compelled because the billboards broadcasting plain hate toward some woman named Sarah was weird to me. I felt really concerned. Then, I realized this this was an ad for a movie. And, my concern got deeper. I saw the transformation of the ad with graffiti in my neighborhood. I was glad and relieved someone tagged it. And I've been hoping that there would be others. I haven't seen any? Has anyone else seen other tags eradicating the hate of Sarah ?

The big thing that I was wondering was how long they were going to leave it up. And two days after I posted it here. It was covered up with an ad for the "conscious consumer". Well, I'm here to say that thinking before you buy is not enough. The car or vehicle gets more attention than to care. We care when there is crisis but caring collectively has gotten a bad rap. The reality is it is seeping down the gutters everyday in every city.
I hope others feel prompted. Please talk to our mutual friends. Folks can connect their web pages to their photos and let other folks see the sheer genius work that you and our colleagues make as artists!
Also, Beth after reading your last posts I see real synchronicity between our blogs. I really admire your artful wording and honest perspective. Thank you deeply!

I am inspired by your blog! Interesting that the billboard got changed so quickly, obviously the graffiti made an impact. I love the subtley subversive quality of it: people had to take a second look to get the change, which is powerful in itself. Like Moses turning aside at the burning bush. Your synchronous images via cell phone are like that turning aside. By publishing them you have removed your shoes and created sacred ground. Thanks for sharing! Love ya!

As the vessel that brought this talent artist into the world. She has really had me proud with what she as complished. She is very passionate about whatever she takes on as far as her art. There isn't anything that she can't make, fix or design. As the person that loves and wants everything that she produces I have enjoyed all things that she has produced and would love to have it even thou its made for others. She puts her heart into all of her work and you can see it in the finished product. Keep up the good work and fly, let your wings take you where they will.

One has got to love those anonymous vessels. Some can be so honest about wanting to hold it all! A new post is coming tomorrow... So buckle up, Dorothy, Toto, and find those red slippers. Cause this canvas is going to make folks call ET for a ride!
